Yoga for Back Pain

This clinic is suitable for people suffering significant issues with their backs and who would not be able to attend a regular exercise class, but are keen to reduce their pain without the use of drugs.
This programme is the only researched and proven type of yoga to help back pain.

The ‘Yoga for Healthy Lower Backs’ (YHLB) programme and trial was developed at the University of York and funded by the charity Arthritis Research UK. Input to the programme was from Yoga teachers with an interest in low back pain including John Aplin (Professor of Reproduction Biomedicine at Manchester University) and Jennifer Klaber-Moffat (Professor of Rehabilitation and Therapies at The University of Hull) the advisor for EU Guidelines for Treatment for Low Back Pain.

In 2016 the National Institute for Clinical Excellent (NICE) changed their recommendation for back pain to put exercise as the first treatment, and particularly 'mind/body' group exercise. Yoga for Healthy Lower Backs meets this requirement. Mercede has adapted this course to offer a weekly Yoga for Healthy Lower Backs clinic. Results from the last 18 months have been excellent. In line with the YHLB research we encourage home practice at least twice a week on an ongoing basis in order to maintain a ‘healthy lower back’. In order to help with home practice we provide online support with videos of the exercises and presentations so you can refresh your knowledge as you learn more about the causes of back pain and the management solutions.
